biography

 

Dafe Oboro is a filmmaker, producer, portrait and documentary photographer who focuses his lens sensitively on communities in the sprawling commercial city of Lagos and the people who call them home. His work addresses issues of masculinity, social marginalisation, migration, culture and identity.

Born on December 24, 1994 in Ajegunle (one of Africa's largest urban community), Lagos, Nigeria. Dafe graduated with first-class honors from Nottingham Trent University  where he studied Broadcast Journalism  and initially worked in the journalism, fashion and modelling industry in England, before moving back to his home town in Lagos, Nigeria to embark on a career in film and photography. He has gone on to produce major projects under his production company, DAFe Films. In 2015, Dafe filmed, produced and photographed a documentary short which examines the human cost of slum demolition in Africa, focusing his lens particularly on the vast and overcrowded slum communities in the city of Lagos.

Oboro has lately been described as 'the filmmaker spotlighting a youth movement in Nigeria' - DAZED for his ongoing film and photography project on youth masculinity and beauty - Boy, You're Beautiful. And the role he plays  as a casting director for film projects, fashion editorials and many more.

Dafe Oboro continues to live and work in Lagos.

BOY, YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL

A film series exploring young masculinity in Nigeria - In this short film series BOY, YOU'RE BEAUTIFUL Dafe Oboro casts boys living in one of Africa's largest commercial cities - Lagos in Nigeria. He seeks to explore the individual meaning of beauty from boys living in a city in which they call home. 


KILON SHELE GAN GAN

SLUM DWELLERS: NOT DEAD, NOT LIVING

As in developing countries around the world, increasing numbers of Nigerians are leaving their rural homes and traveling to urban areas in search of jobs and better lives. Many end up in slums. Dafe Oboro's documentary focuses on the mega slums of the sprawling commercial city of Lagos and the people who call them home. In particular it examines the human cost of slum demolitions.

A beautiful struggle is a fashionable portrait following a small-town man’s pursuit of stardom against a vibrant, psychedelic backdrop of Lagos city where music is his passion. Written/Produced/Directed by Dafe Oboro in collaboration with Vlisco&co. Featuring fashion designs by Papa Oyeyemi and Abiola Olusola.
